My painting process begins with my love of the local landscape. During my many outings I collect sketches and studies of its stunning and often fleeting variations. Back in the studio these references are played out on canvas as I pay homage to the outstanding beauty of the Causeway Coast and glens. My coastal works often involve paring back the elements and increasing the energy of the brush strokes to capture something of the power of the sea and the elements. My rural inland scenes by contrast are often calm and tranquil a place where time almost stands still. I usually find myself blending and softening the brush marks to reflect the serenity that envelopes me in these locations. I constantly cross the boundaries between realism, impressionism, and abstraction as I try to share these perceived moments My chosen medium is oil as I love its ability to encourage experimental mark making.
