“Painting on location with the sounds around you of birds, people, traffic, weather and water gives you memories, atmosphere and qualities of light, that you cannot get from copying photographs”
Pat McLaughlin was born in London and has lived in Northern Ireland for over 40 years. Since retiring from lecturing in Textiles and Fashion Design at the University of Ulster she has concentrated on painting using a variety of mixed media. The mixed media include acrylic, watercolour, gouache, ink, collage and a variety of drawing mediums.
Inspiration for her paintings comes from sketching and painting on location in both architectural and natural environments. This brings energy and immediacy to the finished work. Working on location has developed the regeneration of ideas, created mood and has helped to catch the fleeting quality of light. This method of gathering visual material generates large amounts of reference material that is then used for final paintings.
Pat McLaughlin is a diploma member of the Ulster Society of Women Artists and a member of the Ulster Watercolour Society. Her work is in private collections in the UK and Ireland.
